Are Explosion-Proof Lights Waterproof and Dustproof? Suitable for Wet and Outdoor Use?

Date: 2025-05-11

Waterproof and Dustproof Explosion-Proof Lights

Many people ask: Are explosion-proof lights waterproof and dustproof? Can they be used outdoors, in humid chemical plants, offshore platforms, or rainy mining sites?

Answer: Ex d (flameproof), Ex nR (restricted breathing), and Ex e (increased safety) are all enclosure protection types. Ex d type usually has the highest protection level, reaching up to IP68 or IP69K. Ex nR and Ex e types can achieve IP67 and IK10. These levels make them suitable for most wet and outdoor environments. However, they must have ATEX + IECEx certification.

What Does IP Rating Mean?

IP rating (IEC 60529) indicates protection against dust and water:

IP RatingDust ProtectionWater ProtectionTypical Use Cases
IP65Dust protectedRainproofGeneral outdoor
IP66Fully dust tightHeavy rainMost outdoor and humid areas
IP67Fully dust tightWater jet washingHeavy rain, wash-down areas
IP68Fully dust tightShort-term immersionExtreme wet conditions

Final Thoughts

Ex d, Ex nR, and Ex e explosion-proof lights can be used in humid and outdoor environments if they have proper IP ratings. All IP ratings must be based on the official ATEX or IECEx certification documents. Always verify the actual IP rating listed on the valid certificate.

SEEKINGLED's LO Series and FL8 Series LED explosion proof lights achieve IP67 protection rating.
