How Do LED Explosion-Proof Lights Keep Surface Temperatures So Low?

Date: 2025-05-10

LED Explosion-Proof Light Surface Temperature Control

In high-risk places like petrochemical plants, oil & gas facilities, pharmaceutical factories, and mines, the surface temperature of explosion-proof lights is very important for safety. LED explosion-proof lights control temperature well through practical design.

Temperature Classes (T-Class)

International standards (IEC 60079) divide surface temperature into six classes:

Temperature ClassMax Surface TemperatureSafety Level
T1450°CLow
T2300°CMedium
T3200°CModerate
T4135°CGood
T5100°CVery Good
T685°CBest

T6 is the safest and most recommended for hazardous areas.

How LED Explosion-Proof Lights Control Surface Temperature

  • High Luminous Efficacy – Less Heat from the Start: LED explosion-proof lights can reach 130–160 lm/W, while traditional HID lamps are usually only 70–80 lm/W. With the same amount of electricity, LEDs produce more light output, so less energy turns into heat. This reduces heat generation right from the beginning.
  • Smart Heat Conduction Design: LED chips use SMD packaging. Light comes out from the front, while heat is quickly conducted away through the back metal board (MCPCB) to the outer housing. This prevents heat from building up around the chip.
  • Large Heatsink System: Quality LED explosion-proof lights use a solid die-cast aluminum housing with dense cooling fins. Many also have airflow designs to help natural convection. Even in 55°C hot environments, the surface temperature can stay below 80°C — easily achieving T6 rating.
  • Separate Chambers Design: The LED light source, driver, and wiring areas are separated. This stops heat from the driver affecting the LEDs. The explosion-proof joints are designed so they don't trap heat inside, avoiding the "oven effect".

Final Thoughts

LED explosion-proof lights achieve T5 or T6 temperature ratings through high luminous efficacy, fast heat conduction, large cooling surfaces, and smart separate chamber design. When choosing lights for hazardous areas, temperature class (especially T6) is one of the most important factors.

SEEKINGLED's FL8 Series LED Explosion Proof Flood Lights achieve T6 temperature class for 100W–200W models, and T5 temperature class for 240W and 300W models.
